HPGR and ball milling: compare more than green strength
Particle preparation connects strength, feed characteristics and accepted-size yield.

What the source reports
The 2020 study Investigation of iron ore particle size and shape on green pellet quality compares HPGR and ball-mill preparation. It reports stronger green pellets by drop and compression measures for the HPGR-ground material under the study conditions.
Why it matters — IOP analysis
A preparation trial should track size yield and circuit behaviour alongside strength. Similar specific-surface values do not necessarily describe identical particle shape or size distribution. The useful outcome is a material envelope that supports the complete balling and thermal route.
What this evidence does not establish
The result belongs to the tested concentrate, preparation and balling conditions. It does not establish a universal industrial throughput advantage or justify selecting grinding equipment from one strength metric. Publisher access may require a subscription; the DOI links to the source record.
Questions for an engineering review
- Are ore, moisture and binder held comparable?
- Does a strength improvement survive the actual handling route?
- What happens to accepted-size yield, recycle and subsequent thermal performance?
