Pellet quality: from green feed to ironmaking
Interpret strength, chemistry, degradation and reduction behaviour against the sampling method and intended BF or DR application.
Green-pellet quality
Size distribution
The spread of pellet sizes in a sampled stream. Specify the sample location and size-class boundaries when comparing results.
Moisture & handling behaviour
Record moisture and the approved measures of green-pellet strength together with the sampling and test procedure. A result without its method is difficult to compare.
Fired-pellet physical quality
Cold compression strength
Resistance to a compressive load under a defined test. Interpret it alongside the method, sample size and distribution of results.
Tumble & abrasion behaviour
Measures associated with pellet degradation under a specified test. Different indices describe different outcomes; retain the exact method and reporting basis.
Chemical quality
Iron and gangue
Iron content and non-iron constituents are part of the product specification. The acceptable composition depends on the intended downstream process and product.
Additives and product design
Preserve the product designation and analytical basis when comparing assays. A single iron-content figure does not describe the full specification.
Reduction-related quality
Reducibility
How readily oxygen is removed under defined reduction conditions. Laboratory conditions and the intended plant application matter.
Behaviour during reduction
Strength, degradation and clustering behaviour during reduction require relevant test evidence. Cold strength alone is not a complete qualification for a DR application.
There is no single universal acceptance table.
Agree the product application, sampling, test method and contractual limits with the receiving operation. This reference introduces quality concepts; it does not prescribe operating or acceptance limits.
Further technical reading
Read a certificate as a set of different tests
A quality certificate should distinguish green-pellet handling, fired-pellet physical integrity, chemical composition and behaviour during reduction. These describe different stages and mechanisms. Require the method, units, size fraction, sample count and reporting basis for each result. A blank field is not equivalent to a satisfactory test.
| Result family | Interpret with | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Green strength / drop behaviour | Moisture, size fraction and handling/test method | Guaranteed fired strength or suitability for every transfer. |
| Cold compression | Individual-result spread and agreed sampling method | Reduction performance from the mean alone. |
| Tumble / abrasion | Exact method and the retained/fine fractions reported | Interchangeability of differently defined indices. |
| Chemistry | Dry basis, analytical method, product type and full relevant assay | A complete process qualification from total Fe alone. |
| Reduction properties | Temperature, gas composition, load, size and test duration | Identical behaviour in every BF or DR plant. |
Use the distribution when the average hides risk
Illustrative strength dataset
Five hypothetical results of 100, 250, 250, 300 and 350 units have the same mean, 250, as five results of 240, 245, 250, 255 and 260. The first set contains a much weaker observation. These invented values have no acceptance meaning; they show why a mean alone cannot describe variability.
Define the actual strength units and contractual test method before using a result. In routine review, preserve the number of tests and the agreed dispersion or lower-tail indicator. Compare like size classes and sampling points. A change in the sample’s size mix may alter the reported distribution even if each size class behaves similarly.
Build a quality investigation from location and time
When a customer reports more fines, trace the shipment rather than immediately changing the furnace. Compare retained production samples, post-handling samples and receiving samples using compatible methods. Establish whether the affected material corresponds to a known operating period, stockpile segment or handling event.
When the issue is metallurgical performance, involve the receiving plant early. The investigation should connect the pellet lot with blend, burden, gas and operating conditions. Keep a supplier’s production certificate and the customer’s process observations as complementary evidence. Neither automatically disproves the other.
Create an acceptance dossier with explicit gaps
The dossier should contain product designation, ore/blend information as agreed, current assays, physical and metallurgical results, sampling methods, historical variability and intended downstream use. Identify tests not yet performed and the planned route to qualification. Record changes to the product recipe and manufacturing route so an old approval is not assumed to cover a materially different product.
